Market Day

Kay Mooney writes...

2016 gets off to a wonderful start with a great Lions Market. Lots of home crafts, produce, plants and bargains to be had.

(The Community Market is held on the second Sunday of the month).

Red algae in the Lakes

There have been reports of an oily red substance on beaches surrounding the Gippsland Lakes including near the Esplanade in Lakes Entrance.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) Regional Algae Coordinator, Anthony Costigan said: “This is a non-toxic algae called Noctiluca scintillans which is often prevalent in the Lakes system. The current conditions in the Lakes are conducive to the growth of this algae, so it’s more widespread and obvious than usual. This algae causes ammonia-scented oily red water during the day, but at night can be quite beautiful as it creates patches of bioluminescence. Algae are naturally occurring organisms present in all waterways and the Gippsland Lakes contain many different types of algae at varying levels as part of the natural environment and balance of the Lakes system. Warmer weather conditions will lead to a natural increase in the abundance and variety of algae and other organisms in the Lakes.”

Algae are rarely harmful to human health, however DELWP advises people to avoid contact with any water that looks murky or discoloured. Contact may cause skin irritation, especially to cuts and abrasions. If contact does occur, wash with clean water.

DELWP monitors the algae in the Gippsland Lakes on a regular basis.

Why we live where we live

It's Australia Day 2016 and while we take time out for fun with our family and friends, today is also an opportunity to think about the wonderful place where we live.

We've recently received links to a couple of videos that showcase some of the natural beauty on the Lakes. Each link will take you to the show and will open in a new browser window...

Laurie Honan sent through a link to Caravan World's Destination Gippsland Lakes (11 January 2016)

Our second clip, How Will You Be Inspired - Gippsland Ambassadors, even features a well-known Raymond Islander!

Missing friends

RINet often receives requests from people searching for old friends...

Hello. Can you help me please? I have lost contact with Terry and Jean Jackson since I moved to the Gold Coast and I'm finding it hard to contact them. The last time I visited them would have been about 6-8 years ago. They lived on Raymond Island and I need to contact them. Can you give me some details on their whereabouts?
Kind regards, Ralph Naudi

If you know where they are or have contact details, can you please get them to contact RINet (email: RaymondIslandNet@gmail.com) and we'll pass the message on.

Raymond Island Net 2016

We're back in business for the new year, with more improvements to the RI Net web site.

As well as our News page, where full articles are listed and archived over the year, take a look at our new Home page and you'll find: live weather reports and weekly rainfall; calendar and news headlines and links to: our full Diary; an interactive map of the Island; our monthly photographic gallery and our new weekly Fishing report.

Our Community and Insider pages are geared for Islanders. On the Community page, you're linked into RICA, Landcare and the activity groups at the Community Hall, as well as housing archives of Raymond Island Matters, photographs of Island events, and favourite songs and videos from early days of the web site. (My favourites are the 'Maggie and Muggins' video clips!) Our Insider started last year and is getting busy with our weekly quiz and new features that will come on line over the next couple of weeks. Keep an eye out for this year's competitions - they have terrific prizes!

Exchange was another page that started quietly last year but is one that should grow during 2016. It's our local 'buy, swap and sell' listing for goods and services on the Island. Listing is a free for service and is limited to Islanders.

Our Island has information about the Island that provides a welcome for visitors and has facts and figures about Islander life. We're working on improving information, photographic galleries and histories of our Koalas and the Ferry. There's information to help prepare for Emergencies. And, best of all, it's easier to find your way around with a simple navigation bar at the top of each page and a 'breadcrumb' trail to follow.

On the technical side, we're also working on a 'mobile' friendly version. Finally, if you have ideas that will improve our site further, email them to: RaymondIslandNet@gmail.com.

Wishing all of our subscribers wonderful year in 2016

The Weather that was...

Greg Juckert compares last year's rainfall with our 2014 statistics:

Days of rain Dec 2015: 7 (Dec 2014: 17)
Days of rain yearly 2015: 96 (2014: 114)
December total rainfall 2015: 175 points / 44 mm (2014: 527 points/132 mm)
Yearly total 2015: 2111 points / 527 mm (2014: 2605 points / 651 mm)

Editor's note: this certainly affects our gardens but we need to be mindful of how much better off we were than in Victoria's Western District, where the Bureau of Meteorology recorded "serious or severe rainfall deficiencies (lowest 10%, or lowest 5% of historical records) are present over much of central and western Victoria."

Limited ferry pass proposal

Proposal: Limited ferry pass - owners of undeveloped land on Raymond Island.

After recently checking with Council, as we understand it, ferry passes are currently provided only to house owners / those commencing housing construction on their land.

As long time owners of undeveloped land in Seventh Parade, we are ratepayers who contribute to services on the island and help foster its amenity, and we believe it is reasonable that Council provides a limited annual pass (12 free trips per year) specifically for owners of undeveloped land.

A limited pass will facilitate land maintenance and improvements as well as contributing to the sense of community. It is anticipated that this initiative would impact ferry revenue only to the extent that each limited pass gets used.

We propose to write to Council early in the New Year to have this matter included in its 2016-2017 budget cycle. If you support this initiative or have other related suggestions, please contact us by email: johnlauricella@live.com.au
