Stinger mystery deepens

Ross Scott lives around the corner at the end of Duck Arm, and he netted this critter off his jetty on 17 January, with others sighted 6 February near Lakes Entrance.

Following the RI News 'Is it an alien?' (24 February 2014) and the RI Mattters 'A Monster From the Shallows (April 2014), he's sure that this is the same jellyfish species, although he describes their colouring as brown.

Ross sent a specimen was sent to the CSIRO Hobart in early February (total expenditure equal to two good bottles of wine), but reports 'still no news from Lisa on the results of DNA tests of our specimen. I will keep you posted. It is all very interesting. Logic, care and good environmental management will one day prevail with the Lakes - but don't hold your breath.'

We look forward to the next news about this mysterious 'visitor'. JP

Landcare trivia

An amazing night was had by all at the first Raymond Island Landcare Trivia Night, with over $1,400 raised to support the rejuvenation of our fabulous island flora.

Ninety-eight people travelled to the RICA Community Hall on RI to challenge not only their own brains but the other teams' as well.
It was great to see people of 20 years to 80+years represented.

Take the TV reception survey

Raymond Island Matters is conducting a survey to find out how satisfied you are with your digital free-to-air, television reception on the Island.

There are many causes of poor digital reception. This survey aims to find out if reception is generally good or if generally below par (pointing to a problem with local transmission).

Add your voice to the findings by completing this simple online survey - it's quite short and won't take long to complete.

Ninety Mile Beach erosion

Rob Morecroft captured these beautiful but stark reminders of how fragile our coastline is near the first blowhole. You can easily see the high tide mark against the dunes.

A community thank you

Greg Juckert sums up for all of us...

I would like to thank the following islanders, who all instantly within minutes of a phone call, made themselves available to crew the island bus, during maintenance to the ferry: Tony Driscale, Mike and Cathy Gaffney, Peter Markwell, John Drury, the first in always Brian Joshua and Alan Farrell, and the rear guard as always Phillip Neal.

Thanks again to Ian Lewis to make the bus available once again.
Many thanks,
Greg.

Easter fishing update

Easter is on us upon and nothing has changed. Bream are still under the jetties and the Tailor are feeding on White Bait at the Tiger Pole (West Cardinal Mark) at the South West point of Raymond Island, in the afternoon.

The Tailor that entered the lakes system last June are still here and quite large. Those that came into the lakes in the last few months have some growing to do, as you can see from the photo.

A big 'thanks' for the ICC

Coralie and Peter Foxton and Val Quirk left yesterday for Myanmar, sending back a message of 'Thank You' to the fantastic residents of Raymond Island, Paynesville and Paynesville Primary School, for their generous donations.

They are helping/teaching/working in an orphanage in Yangon during April.

Donations included: exercise books, lead pencils, coloured pencils, textas, sharpeners, erasers, scissors, Lego (buckets of it), hand knitted toys, paper, tooth brushes, toothpaste and monetary donations to spend in Yangon on items that the orphanage specifically needs, e.g clothing.

Fortunately the airline allows them 30kg each and all these donations amounted to 62kg!

A huge THANK YOU to all concerned.

Raymond Island Pro Am

A group of lady golfers from the island had their 2nd annual social golf day. Val Quirk and Linda Callahan once again assembled a small but keen group of golfers. The day is a social event open to all ladies who want a fun day. The cash prize is part of the atmosphere, so the competition is somewhat serious. This year the day was followed by a shared lunch.

The Winner of the cup with 20 stapleford points was Elaine Gwynn; second, Kazumi Purvis with 18 points, and third place on count back with 15 points was Sue Plowman.

The next golf day is scheduled for Monday, September 29th. All ladies are invited to attend if you have a handicap.
